When the planet is threatened to be overwhelmed by a succession of natural disasters, a global network of satellites is created to monitor and change the global climate. When a malfunction causes damage to different cities across the world, the global system begins to unravel and the race against time begins as a geostorm threatens to wipe out the planet.

The trailer to this film unfortunately doesn’t paint a good picture; I went in with no expectations for a good film and was fully ready for trash. While it wasn’t as terrible as that, it is by a mile still not good. The cast was good but some of the relationships felt a little forced, especially between brothers Jake and Max (Gerard Butler and Jim Sturgess.) This lack of connection between so many characters could be down to the lack of detail given to these two dimensional creations.

There are a number of issues that I have with this film, the first being how ridiculously unbelievable it is that the WHOLE world come together and agree on one plan of action (as if this would ever happen.) Also the film takes way too long to ‘storm’ I went into this film at least expecting lots of cool visuals and sfx. The sfx were nothing special and often so fake looking it was funny. The plot boiled down basically ‘have you tried rebooting the system?’ There was a small whodunit plot feature but even this fizzled out quickly.

To be honest the only reason that I gave this film such a high rating is purely because I’m a sucker for a trashy end of the world film. It also included all my favourite disaster film clichĂ©s: people freezing on the spot, people driving away from floor falling beneath them in a stupid vehicle, people running away from natural disasters and actually surviving (bonus points in this film for the beach-goer who out ran not only an icy weather plunge where people froze around her but also a plane that fell from the sky.) I can’t end this review without special mention of secret service agent Sarah (Abbie Cornish) who was a total badass throughout the film and was definitely a personal saving grace for me.

Geostorm was an average movie at its very best. I feel like the genre of movie is very much one of the past. Climate change is really happening and right now we don’t have any fancy satellites to prevent it happening in the first place. The whole end of the world scenario is becoming less and less fictional with each day. This might be the reason why it was a box office flop - some reports have said that Geostorm struggled to break even. Not surprising as the marketing campaign was poor - we only knew about this movie from the trailers before another film.

On the whole this wasn’t a complete disaster of a movie (ha) - I can see where they were trying to go with it. The complex satellite system which had been corrupted and even the creator (Gerard Butler) couldn’t even fix. Also the sub-story of the relationship between brothers which was unbelievable and mostly irrelevant to the plot.

Theres not too much to comment about this movie, I think you get the general idea of what a disaster film is about. There’s nothing outrageously different about Geostorm than any other end of the world movie. However I wasn’t completely bored watching it and was engaged in what was happening yet I would never watch it again or recommend anyone to watch it.
