Brigsby Bear is the story of James Pope, who was abducted as a child and lived a sheltered life in the desert of Utah. Now 20 something years old, his whole life is TV show ‘Brigsby Bear’. When he is found and returned back to his real family he discovers that his ‘fake’ dad created and filmed all Brigsby Bear episodes. James then makes it his quest to finish the story of Brigsby Bear while experiencing ‘normal’ life for the first time.
Another absolute banger from Odeon’s Screen Unseen. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and can see it creating a real cult following. Honestly would love a Brigsby Bear T Shirt. Let me know where I could get one from! The storyline of the film was so original, like nothing I’ve seen before. From the first five minutes I was completely hooked. James’ naivety was so intriguing and it was interesting to see the way he adapted to normal living. Kyle Mooney who played James really made the role his own, and immersed himself in the character - it was so believable.
The originally of the plot made it so easy to get involved in the film. All the characters were also very likeable. The script was very well written and the small jokes and one liners made enjoyable viewing. I don’t really want to give much more away about this film as I want you to enjoy it with an open mind. But I did love this movie, honestly one of the best this year. When it’s released on the 8th December, please go and check it out - I cannot recommend it enough.

‘Brigsby Bear Adventures’ is James Pope’s favourite TV show. When it suddenly ends, he decides to finish the story himself. While doing this he had to learn about a whole new world.
My fifth Screen Unseen of the year; nothing was going to top ‘The Florida Project from last month, but this came pretty close. I’d only seen this trailer once before and I had kind of forgotten that it was even coming out, let alone what it was going to be about. Suffice to say I loved it.
There are a number of things that make this film such a joy to watch: the acting, the script and the plot. First I’m going to talk about Kyle Mooney portraying James Pope a 25 year old who knows nothing about the world we live in. Watching him traverse the modern world was liking watching Bambi on ice, the way he mimicked the people around him, the way he talked and even the way he searched for things on Google using ‘please and thanks you’ at the end of every search. The dry way he delivered his lines just added to the wittiness of this film. It features plenty of familiar faces like Mark Hamill (Star Wars), Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) and Andy Samburg (Brooklyn 99) who bring their own qualities to the film. I also enjoyed the performance by Ryan Simpkins who plays Aubrey Pope, James’ sister who quickly tires of him but then forms a real familial bond with him.
The plot is something that I personally haven’t seen before but it is funny and sometimes a bit dark too. It touches on things that are quite deep but it is done in such a comical way that you can’t help but laugh about it. You can tell it was created by a bunch of ‘Saturday Night Live’ veterans, it was quirky and hilarious, I haven’t heard so much laughing in the cinema for a long time.
There is a lot more I more to say about this film but I don’t want to give the plot away! This film is hilarious and definitely worth a watch. It’s charming, funny, original and creative.
