Based on the true story of the kidnap of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer.) It follows the desparation of his mother (Michelle Williams) to convince billionaire J.P Getty to pay the ransom. With the help of Getty's advisor (Mark Wahlberg) they race against time and angry kidnappers to reveal the true worth of love and money.
This film was something that I quite enjoyed despite the first ten minutes of time and location hopping that I found kind of annoying to keep track of. Getting past that it became a fast-paced thriller with some well fleshed-out characters. The plot was interesting and kept me intrigued, especially watching the friendship form between kidnapped JP III and the kidnapper's friend Cinquanta form and even change the way that he was treated. You can see that Ridley Scott was the director as the film looks fantastic (partially because it was set in Rome) and there are some great camera shots.
Michelle Williams has done a great job lately, first as Charity in 'The Greatest Showman' and was amazing in the role of devoted mother who would do anything to have her son back. But in my opinion, the real star of the show was Christopher Plummer as billionaire JP. Playing the richest, tightest man on earth is a role he was born to play (he was also incredible as Scrooge in 'The Man who Invented Christmas'.)
While it is in no way subtle it does make you think about the value of things, both people and possessions - as you are told by the film 'everything has a price.'
Final mention goes out to the replacement of Kevin Spacey for Christopher Plummer. Not only was the better choice made but the re-casting of Spacey so close to the release is the kind of action we need to see being taken.
