Based on the true events from the beginning of World War II. Almost as soon as he becomes Prime Minister he faces one of the toughest trials, negotiate peace with Nazi Germany or remain firm and fight as a nation. With the Nazis unstoppable take over of Western Europe and the troops trapped at Dunkirk, Churchill must rally the unprepared country, the doubtful King and fights within his own party.
After Dunkirk last summer and Churchill early last year, I wasn't sure how they were going to make an impact with something so similar. I was wrong, this is up there and is as good as the others if not better in ways. While Dunkirk focused on the air, land and sea fighting, this film focused it's plot on the troubles that Churchill faced on the home-front. It's not the most action packed film but instead focuses mainly on deep conversation.
At times it felt a little long - but I can understand that everything in it was important and couldn't have been cut out realistically. It was interesting to see so much of what I've learnt about come to life on the screen and you couldn't have cast a better man for the job, Gary Oldman was outstanding as Churchill and one of the best I've seen play him. Kristin Scott Thomas was also very good as his wife.
My favourite scene of this film came at the end of this film and even though I know it's fictitious, I absolutely adored it. The idea of Churchill riding the train and talking to the British public to get a feel for the public mood is something I love. Watching him deliver his famous speech to parliament was also a moving moment and I can completely understand why it has been receiving standing ovations and applause.
