Parapsychologist Elise Rainier gets a phone call from someone claiming his house is haunted. Even worse is the address - her childhood home. Alongside her investigative team she travels back to Five Keys to finally face her worst fear. The childhood monster that has haunted her since.
As I haven't seen the other 3 Insidious films, I took this at face value and hoped that I would understand what was going on. I had no problem figuring out the plot and didn't feel that I was lacking any information. While I'm sure there were connections to previous films they weren't necessary for understanding this one.
The film itself was fine, it had lot of the classic thriller/horror tropes: dark rooms, loud screaming, sudden jumps and lots of loud noises. The plot worked well enough, although I did feel it was a little bit stretched, four films is probably enough for this franchise. For me the saving grace of this plot was the family and backstory of Elise Rainier; I'm a huge sucker for a backstory (I'm a big fan of 'Ouija: Origin of Evil.')
Lin Shaye is the true hero of this film and the franchise alike (I assume) she brings a sort of likeability to the role of a paranormal explorer, while her two 'sidekicks' are there for pure comic relief and if anything were a little annoying.
There isn't much else that I can say about this film without giving too much away. Final mention goes to the make-up artist who did a great job of creating the ghostly figures.
